Winyaps - Frequently Asked Questions
Winyaps support on the Web
Pstab is limited to using Postscript fonts and the resulting file must be printed on a Postscript printer. Winyaps will use any Windows font installed on the PC. Winyaps is normally used as an interactive program (i.e. you open the file, make changes if you require and then save it), but there is a console application, WYC.EXE, which runs in a DOS window on Windows 95 and higher. All Winyaps production features are supported by WYC, but in a batch mode.
  • Crossbreaks/Banners

Winyaps Pro works best when crossbreaks are set up using underlined automatic headings (n23 statements) rather than G and P statements. There is no need to mark the boundary of table columns using ^, ~, { or }.

  • Quantum font statement

The Quantum font statement must not be used. It can break table lines up into several segments split by carriage returns. Winyaps only expects to see complete lines in tables and makes sense of their components, allocating each part to a style.

  • Size instructions for table titles

The "#Snnn" on table titles is not required. Winyaps allocates titles to specific styles based upon their position. You can also force specific styles using control-characters if you are not happy with the range of Winyaps styles.

  • Tabs within side headings

Winyaps automatically right justifies numbers in parentheses on the assumption that they are factors for calculating mean scores. You do not need to specify the right-justify parameter that you normally do for pstab.

Additionally you can split a side heading into left, centre and right justified sections. See "Fine Control over Winyaps Formatting" in the manual.

  • Working with styles

Winyaps styles are defined in DFN files. By default, Winyaps applies the global styles specified in Winyaps.DFN in the program folder. If the folder containing the table file to be opened contains a Winyaps.DFN file, this local styles file is applied.

The user can also apply styles from any named template interactively or as part of the WYC command line.

Styles are defined by making changes to your tables, updating the styles and then saving the template. You can replace the global template, local template or save it under a new name.

  • Underlining side headings

If you underline n03/n23 side headings they are allocated to a different style to aid formatting.

  • Further reading

The manual contains extensive information on working with Winyaps. If you are not happy with the default Winyaps layouts the chapter on "Fine control over Winyaps formatting" may be of particular interest.
